Salary: Grade 10 - Fixed Point SO5 - £23,500 per annum (pro rata).
Contract: Permanent
Hours - 14.5 hours per week.
Working Pattern: Fridays, plus one other day per week.
(Days will be confirmed as part of a rota sent out monthly in advance and will include at least one weekend day per month).
Are you passionate about coastal management and outdoor work? Hastings Borough Council is looking for a Coastal Maintenance Officer to join our Coastal and Commercial Services team.
This role is vital in ensuring the safety, maintenance, and presentation of Hastings' stunning promenade, beaches, and foreshore.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine and responsive inspections of coastal areas and assets.
- Carry out or arrange maintenance tasks to ensure high standards of safety and presentation.
- Maintain accurate records of work to meet health and safety requirements.
- Collaborate with internal teams (such as Housing and Licensing) and external partners (such as the Coast Guard and RNLI).
- Deputise for the Coastal Operations Officer as needed.
- Engage with the public and represent the Council positively.
About You:
We’re seeking someone with experience in outdoor and coastal maintenance work, ideally with knowledge of Hastings’ coastal geography.
You should be able to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong customer-focused approach.
Essential Requirements:
- Previous experience in operational coastal work or similar.
- Full Clean UK driving licence (you will be expected to drive in this role)
- Good knowledge of DIY, general maintenance, and power tools (carpentry skills preferred).
- Knowledge or an interest in climate change, coastal processes, and protection strategies.
- Flexible with working hours (weekends, Bank Holidays, and extended summer hours required).
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
